Makar Sankranti has great importance in Hinduism. Makar Sankranti is the Hindu harvest festival and one of the most auspicious day and it is celebrated in almost every part of India and Nepal in a myriad of cultural forms with full of devotion, fervor, and gaiety. The day is also marked arrival of spring in Indian which is celebrated traditionally. Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the Lord Sun (Surya) into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makar) on its celestial path.

The Vedas-Puranas say that on this day lord sun visits the house of his son Shani (Saturn), who is the swami of Makar Rashi. The day symbolized the importance of the relationship of father and son. People worship and thank Lord Surya for all the success and prosperity.
