In Hindu tradition, honoring and remembering ancestors (Pitras) is considered one of the most sacred duties. The ritual performed to offer food, water, and prayers to departed souls is known as Shradh Puja. It is primarily conducted during Pitru Paksha, a fortnight in the lunar month of Bhadrapada (September–October), but can also be performed on tithi (death anniversary) or Amavasya. Performing Shradh Puja at home with devotion ensures peace for ancestors and blessings for descendants.
Significance of Shradh Puja
According to scriptures, ancestors bless their families with prosperity, health, and harmony when they are remembered with respect. If Shradh is not performed, the souls may remain unsatisfied, leading to ancestral imbalance (Pitra Dosh). Shradh Puja is thus not only an act of gratitude but also a means to seek forgiveness for mistakes and to ensure liberation (moksha) for the departed souls.
Preparations for Shradh Puja
● Purity and Cleanliness: The place of worship should be cleaned thoroughly. The performer must take a bath and wear clean clothes.
● Sacred Items: Collect materials such as black sesame seeds (til), rice, kusha grass, water, cow’s ghee, incense sticks, flowers, fruits, cooked food, and a picture of the ancestor.
● Seating Arrangement: The ritual should be done while facing south, the direction associated with ancestors.
● Intention (Sankalp): Before beginning, the performer makes a vow to conduct the puja for the peace of their ancestors.
Step-by-Step Procedure of Shradh Puja
● Invocation of Deities: Begin by worshipping Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Yama for removing obstacles and guiding the ritual.
● Tarpan (Offering of Water): Offer water mixed with black sesame seeds and kusha grass while chanting mantras for the ancestors. This is done three times for their peace and satisfaction.
● Pind Daan: Prepare pindas (balls made of rice, barley flour, sesame seeds, and ghee) and offer them on kusha grass. This symbolizes feeding and satisfying the ancestors’ souls.
● Shradh Bhojan: Prepare satvik food (without onion, garlic, or non-vegetarian items) and offer it to the ancestors. Traditionally, food is also served to Brahmins, which is considered.
● Havan (Optional): A small fire ritual can be performed by offering ghee, sesame seeds, and rice while chanting mantras for purification and blessings.
● Feeding Cows, Dogs, and Birds: Offering food to cows, dogs, and crows after the puja is believed to directly reach the ancestors.
● Dakshina and Prasad: After the ritual, give donations, clothes, or food to Brahmins or needy people. Distribute the prasad among family members to receive blessings.
Mantra for Shradh Puja
Chanting mantras while offering tarpan and pind daan is essential. A simple mantra is: "Om Pitrubhyo Namah, Om Pitrubhyo Namah". This mantra invokes ancestors and conveys respect and offerings.
