Holi is one of the grandest and most popular celebrations. This large festival is celebrated in many cities and ritual areas throughout India. It is an occasion that bring in unadulterated joy and mirth, fun and play, dance and music, and of course lot of bright colors. Holi is celebrated with enthusiasm and gaiety on the full moon day in the month of Phalgun. This year 2018, Holi is celebrated on 02nd of March 2018.

The Legends of Holi

The story of Holika and Prahlad is one of the most important stories of Holi. According of Narada Purana, there was a time when a demon king name Hiranyakashyap rules over the entire world. as a ruler, Hiranyakashyap was ruthless and expected every living being to worship him. To Hiranyakashyap surprise, his son Prahlad refused to worship him. Instead, Prahlad was devoted to lord Narayan. Hiranyakashyap tried to murder Prahlad on numerous time, but he was thwarted every time due to the efforts of Lord Vishnu.

He asked her sister Holika to enter a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap as holika had a boon which made the immune to fire. The story goes that Prahlad was saved by lord himself for his extreme devotion and evil minded; holika was burnt to ashes for her boon worked only when she entered the fire alone.

Holika Dahan

Holika Dahan is the major ritual performed at the time of Holi which is also considered an important Holi Puja. People light bonfires on the eve of Holi festival to celebrate the victory of ‘good’ over ‘bad’ which is called Holika Dahan. People start gathering wood on the important crossroads of the city. Holi Puja or holika take place on an auspicious time in the evening a day before the holi festival.
